This month’s installment of this column marks my sixth month and I think that’s a pretty big milestone. September isn’t a huge month for Dark Horse but what they’re putting out is high quality and worth your time and money. Let’s jump into the picks.

9. Will This Buck The Trend?

I’ll say right off the bat that I don’t play video games. It’s never been one of my things. I have however seen some gameplay videos of Mirror’s Edge and it’s pretty gorgeous. Video game tie ins tend to not be so good so we’ll see if this can break that trend.

8. “The Invisibles” For A New Era

I’ve been fortunate enough to have read “The Tomorrows” #1 by this point and it is one of the strongest debuts of the year. There are lots of dystopian influences on this series but it’s a unique story and very, very smart. Each issue features a different artist and for the the third issue, Ian MacEwan steps in. MacEwan is incredibly talented and it’ll be a real treat to see what he brings to this issue.

The Tomorrows #3 (of 6)
Curt Pires (W), Ian MacEwan (A/Cover), Pete Toms (C), and Dylan Todd (Cover)

• A bold new speculative-fiction comic from writer Curt Pires, each issue illustrated by a different brilliant artist!

7. Washing Away The Past

Yes, “Barb Wire” is best known for the awful Pamela Anderson movie but this new comic series has some serious promise. I’ve had the opportunity to read the first issue of this and it is a different thing altogether. There’s still lots of sex appeal (not just from Barb) and tons of action. This isn’t taking itself too seriously and writer Chris Warner has also shown some growth. This isn’t stuck in the 1990’s but does pay homage to that era so it’s appeal is relatively wide.

Barb Wire #3
Chris Warner (W), Patrick Olliffe (P), Tom Nguyen (I), Gabe Eltaeb (C), and Adam Hughes (Cover)
On sale Sept 2
FC, 32 pages
$3.99

6. An Artistic, Honest and Unique Look at Depression

This is yet another series I’ve had the chance to get an early peek at and it’s honestly one of the most effective stories about depression I’ve ever read. Our hero is an empath who has hit his limit. “Negative Space” is not simply a look at one man’s depressive spiral; it’s a science fiction adventure in disguise. Lindsay and Gieni are giving us an incredibly relatable lead but also entertaining us with an action packed and enthralling plot. This is a short 4 issue miniseries that deserves your attention.

Negative Space #3
Ryan K Lindsay (W) and Owen Gieni (A/Cover)
On sale Sept 9
FC, 32 pages
$3.99
Miniseries
The battle surrounding our hero reaches fever pitch, just as his depression reaches a new low. Now, desperate and lost, he is finally prepared to meet his end—but doing so could have disastrous unintended consequences for the ancient and mysterious Evorah species.
“Seriously scary.”—Comic Book Resources

5. It’s Time For Superheroes To Pay Up

Imagine if Batman had the Batmobile repossessed? That’s the idea behind “The Paybacks” and seriously, how great does that sound? Being a superhero is definitely an expensive job and on more than one occasion, I’ve thought about how money would even be acquired to do some of these things. This is told from the perspective of the repo men themselves which means we’re definitely in for something funny but hopefully heartfelt as well.

The Paybacks #1
Donny Cates (W), Eliot Rahal (W), Geoff Shaw (A), and Lauren Affe (C)
On sale Sept 16
FC, 32 pages
$3.99
Ongoing

• Being a superhero has a price. Meet the team that collects it.
• A superhero comedy for the debt-ridden generation!

“I think my favorite thing about the book is that Night Knight doesn’t ride the unicorn. Like, I think that is genius.”—Gerard Way

4. I’m Running Out of Predator Quotes

“Archie vs. Predator” has been total mayhem and that’s why it’s so good. It’s been the perfect pairing of both franchises that hasn’t let up on the violence and chaos. De Campi has really let loose with a wild storyline that finds classic characters dropping dead left and right. It would have been easy to write this off as a cash grab gimmick but this has been one of the most fun reads I’ve had all year. The hardcover collects the whole series and if you passed on it, this is your chance to pre-order and fix that mistake.

Archie vs. Predator HC
Alex de Campi (W), Fernando Ruiz (P/Cover), Rich Koslowski (I/Cover), and Jason Millet (C)

“Archie vs. Predator #1 is a gift from God himself.”—Comic Book Resources
“The essence of what makes Archie comics work in conflict with what makes Predator work.”—Multiversity Comics
“If you thought Archie Meets the Punisher was bizarre, you haven’t seen anything yet.”—IGN

3. Take a Trip To the Scariest County in America

The last couple of years has seen a pretty decent influx of horror comics but none have had an immediate impact the way “Harrow County” has. Cullen Bunn is doing amazing work lately and this series, at just two issues in, is really proving to be one of his strongest monthly outputs. Tyler Crook’s art is terrifying, beautiful and really lines up with the time period well.

2. A Collected Version Long Overdue

“The Goon” is a modern classic and while the paperbacks are available easily, a worthy hardcover does not. This is a big, library edition similar to the “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” editions and it doesn’t have a price tag that will completely break the bank.

The Goon Library Volume 1 HC (advance solicit)

“The action flows so cohesively from one panel to the next, you’re engaged from the first smashed window.” —Nerds on the Rocks

1. Is It Getting a Little Cold In Here?

Without a doubt, the highlight from Dark Horse in September (and all of comics really) is the return of “Colder”. Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra give us the stuff of nightmares with this story. Imagine something horrifying, amplify it a hundred times and you still won’t get to the fear level of Ferreyra’s art. The story is really about Declan and Reese and at this point, they’ve been through literal hell but with Nimble Jack back, there’s a lot more horror in store for them. Both trades are in stores now and there’s plenty of time to catch up.
