Soliciting Multiversity: Marvel’s Top 10 for September 2018

I think we’re finally past the flood of #1 issues – now we just have a moderate amount of #1 issues and a few annuals. So, what comics will keep us going as the last days of Summer end? Let’s take a look and see.

10. Great Going, Flyboy

When the “Poe Dameron” comics first started, I thought it would just be a quick mini-series about Poe’s adventures leading up to The Force Awakens. Instead, we got multiple arcs, character development, recurring villains, and so much more. But it was still running against the clock of canon, so it was only going to last for so long. It was a fun run, now let’s see where it ends.

In this final chapter of the POE DAMERON series, we see what may be BLACK SQUADRON’S last mission, as they desperately attempt to find allies for GENERAL LEIA ORGANA’S decimated RESISTANCE.
It’s been one heck of a ride, but all stories must come to an end.

9. Foregone Conclusion

Silver Surfer is a character with a lengthy history, and yet when we first met him, he’d been in the “herald of Galactus” business for some time. Now we go back to his first time heralding a planet’s doom. While we know that he does eventually undertake the task given to him, seeing him struggle with the weight of the decision will make for a powerful issue no matter how you look at it.

Silver Surfer Annual #1
Written by Ethan Sacks
Illustrated by Andre Lima Arauji
Cover by Philip Tan
Variant Cover by Adi Granov

What mysteries await buried deep within the cosmic multitudes of the Marvel annals? Why — it’s an UNTOLD STORY of the dark and tragic past of the SILVER SURFER, brought to you the mighty Marvel way by ETHAN SACKS (writer of OLD MAN HAWKEYE) and ANDRÉ LIMA ARAÚJO (of the THANOS ANNUAL)!
Anxious to find a world worthy enough to sate the mighty hunger of GALACTUS, Norrin Radd’s early explorations as the Devourer’s new Herald bear no fruit. Until the Surfer discovers an exotic alien planet teeming with life…and energy enough to finally satisfy his master. But can the Surfer really doom an entire sentient civilization just to save his own?

8. Worth the Wait

Remember when Marvel was teasing a “Classified” X-Men project? I couldn’t care for it at all, given the abundance of X-titles already coming out, until the end of “X-Men Gold #30” changed things. As someone who grew up watching the “X-Men” animated series, Rogue and Gambit were the super-powered power couple we all wanted to see succeed and at long last they finally tied the knot. So am I excited to read about their first mission as a married couple? Absolutely. Am I even more glad to know that Kelly Thompson is writing i? Hell yeah.

Mr. and Mrs. X #3

LOVE & MARRIAGE PART 3!
ROGUE and GAMBIT’S romantic getaway is but a faint memory as they’re forced to team up with DEADPOOL to protect a dangerous and extremely valuable “package” when half the galaxy comes to claim it. What secrets does the package hold that the Imperial Guard and Deathbird (with an entire Shi’ar rebellion in tow!) will risk everything for? More importantly, can Rogue, Gambit, and Deadpool stop bickering long enough to win?

7. Set ‘Em Up

While Gail Simone’s run on “Domino” is only a few issues in as of writing this, it’s been off to a fantastic start. Now she’s joined by multiple other talented writers to cover her supporting cast and introduce some new characters – anyone who loves the character of Domino or anyone who’s been on a team with her should keep an eye out for this one.

Also, I’m not sure why Cable taking a bath is important enough to get called out, but I’m sure we’ll find out.

Domino Annual #1

Illustrated by Victor Ibanez, Juan Gedeon, Natacha Bustos, and more

6. ‘Nuff Said

Remember how I keep praising Ryan North’s writing in “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl?” Well, now we get to see how well the comic works without any of that. While this isn’t the first time there’s been a comic with no dialogue, it’s always a test of both the writer and artist’s abilities and teamwork to properly tell a story through action and art alone.

Will I miss the hilarious dialogue? Of course. But I still look forward to seeing how they pull this off.

Comics have been famously described as “pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence,” but do you need words, too? Perhaps so, but also…PERHAPS NOT??
In this special, standalone, ALL-SILENT ISSUE of the UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL, she and Iron Man face off against a villain neither has seen before – who will render them quite literally speechless!
It’s an action-packed adventure that anyone can read, filled with surprises, excitement, action and – for once – NO WORDS!
This is what Ryan gets for jamming so many words into previous issues.

5. Fhtagn

Yes, that’s definitely Cthulhu on the cover. Or at least something very Cthulhu-esque. So how will Moon Knight face off against an eldritch horror of titanic proportions? I have no idea, but the concept sounds great, and Max Bemis has done a fine job with “Moon Knight,” so it’ll be great seeing how this all plays out.

At the end of his rope, Marc takes a much-needed excursion…with his oldest enemy!
Brooklyn is awful nice this time of year. The nightmare-scape of Ra’s domain…not so much.
Here be monsters.

4. Flashback Cap

Captain America has been through a lot throughout his history, but we should never forget that he’s the original puncher of Nazis. In today’s tense and dark times, sometimes we need a reminder of how satisfying punching Nazis can be, and what better way than by seeing Cap and Bucky save people fleeing a concentration camp?

As the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, this comic already resonates with me.

Captain America Annual #1
Written by Tini Howard
Illustrated by Chris Sprouse
Cover by Chris Sprouse
Variant Cover by Kaare Andrews

During an advance scouting mission in World War II, Captain America and Bucky come across an old farmhouse where a group of concentration camp escapees are fending off recapture.
If they can hold the line, the Allies will come to the rescue. But it’s going to be a long night…
Rising star Tini Howard joins superstar Chris Sprouse for a powerful, gripping journey into Captain America’s storied past!
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

3. Says It All

Yes, Wolverine has been alive again for some time now, and the comics about his return are currently ongoing. We get glimpses of him here and there, but what is Logan up to? Well, we finally get answers as the “Hunt for Wolverine” ends and the “Return of Wolverine” begins.

Welcome back, bub.

2. Giant. Flaming. Mammoth.

My usual fanboying over Jason Aaron aside, let’s just take a minute to look at this cover and acknowledge that this is a prehistoric Ghost Rider on a flaming wooly mammoth.

Damn I love comics.

So yes, this gives us more information on the ancient Avengers and the very first Ghost Rider, which is all well and good. But it also gives us, well, a flaming wooly mammoth. What else can you ask for?

Avengers #7

Illustrated by Sara Pichelli

Variant Covers by Clayton Crain, Ema Lupacchino, and Eve Ventrue

FEATURING GHOST RIDER 1,000,000 BC!
If you thought you knew the beginnings of the Marvel Universe, you were wrong! Odin and his Prehistoric Avengers represent a period of Marvel history that’s never been explored. That exploration begins this issue with the origin of the very first Ghost Rider, one who rides a flaming woolly mammoth and battles a savage and familiar foe!

1. Space Vikings

I half suspect Marvel gave this comic the go-ahead just for the name alone, but no matter what the reason, I can appreciate it. So we have a team of Asgardians, including Throg (Frog Thor) and the new Thunderstrike, not to mention the occasionally under-utilized Angela. And they’re in space.

Do I even have to explain why that’s awesome?

I always enjoy it when Marvel sends its non-cosmic characters into space to see how they mesh or clash with the setting. We’ve had Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and now a group of Asgardians heading into the cosmos, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Asgardians of the Galaxy #1
Written by Cullen Bunn
Illustrated by Matteo Lolli
Cover by Dale Keown
Variant Covers by Skottie Young, Humberto Ramons, and Cliff Chang

Spinning out of the events of INFINITY WARS comes an epic space opera from DEADPOOL veterans Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli!
Angela, the not-so-beloved half-sister of Thor. The hotheaded Valkyrie – and the human who shares her form, Annabelle Riggs. Skurge the Executioner, freshly returned from Hel. Throg, the mightiest frog of thunder. Kevin Masterson, the boy who took his father’s mace to become the hero Thunderstrike. And the Destroyer, the Asgardian armor built to take down Celestials – its wielder unknown. The events of INFINITY WARS set NEBULA off on a quest to rule the galaxy – wielding an Asgardian weapon even Thor would fear – and it’s up to this team of gods, assassins, frogs and heroes to stop her.
