Earlier this morning, DC showcased co-publisher Jim Lee’s design for the Batman of the upcoming Earth 2 ongoing. Among the standard hype, however, one paragraph struck this comics blogger as particularly interesting:
“Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. EARTH 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.”
Ruthless and dangerous? Sounds a bit like Thomas Wayne from Flashpoint, if you ask me, and the phrase “there is a Wayne under the mask” makes this seem more likely. Furthermore, no interview I have found about the Earth 2-linked World’s Finest mentions Bruce as Helena’s father — though I very well could have missed something. It makes sense, though; Knight of Vengeance was one of the most widely talked about Flashpoint miniseries — maybe even the only one — and plenty of people lamented that we would never again see Thomas Wayne under the cowl. It could very well be the case that DC actually has listened to their fans’ wishes, but you know what they say about being careful what you wish for.
