The #ComicMarket Weekly (Week of 3/21/12)

Starting this week, we’re going to have a weekly column featuring the #ComicMarket crew. For those that do not know what that is, it’s the comic retailers out there in the Twittersphere who converse about the world of retail under the hash tag #comicmarket. For this column, it will be a few retailers sharing what is hot and what is not in each of their stores, sort of like the old Wizard Magazine column from back in the day.

This week’s feature highlights one shop in specific, but don’t worry. Future editions will have more retailers participating. In fact, if you’re interested in sharing what the buzz is in your neck of the woods, make sure to email me. Now, click through the jump to see what our initial retail friends have to share.

What’s Hot

These three little words cover what’s hot this week…”It’s Millar Time!!” With a Mark Millar double batch arriving this week everything else seems to pale in consideration regardless of how good they are. What could be better than a 12 year old sword wielding girl squaring off against Mother Russia, and if that’s not enough you have Kick Ass Vs. Red Mist…my moneys on Hit Girl…in fact I’d probably back Hit Girl in a fight to the death against Galactus! The second of this double instalment is Supecrooks #1. I mean, just read the blurb on this “When The Market Is Flooded With Competition And The Authorities Are Always On Your Tail, What’s An All-American Supervillain To Do? Go To Spain, Of Course!”…need I say more? It’s a no brainer right?

What’s not

Now from the highs of Kick Ass 2 to the lows of Legion Of Super Heroes. Maybe its just me but as a kid one of my favourite titles was the Legion Of Super Heroes, I still remember fondly stories like the death of Karate Kid at the hands of the Legion of Super Villains (Nemesis Kid to this day remains one of my all-time favourite villains…even though he got his ass handed to him!), the Fatal Five on the rampage and even the creation of the Legion Of Substitute Heroes. Now fast forward 25 years or so to this current version of the Legion…*sigh* what can I say, in fact this probably sums it up better from one of my customers “Who are all these characters?? There’s just TOO. GOD. DAMN. MANY. Yeah, I know it’s the Legion but it feels like a checklist to jam every character in each issue…here comes Cosmic Boy “CHECK”, and now Mon El “CHECK”, oooh and in walks Lightning Lass “CHECK” but where’s the character development??”

Surprise Hit

Surprise hit of the week for me isn’t actually a comic or a graphic novel but rather a statue, not just any statue but the Bowen Designs — Thor Classic Action Statue. I must admit here when I saw this in previews I thought this looks amazing I MUST own this…5 months later when this turned up I then had a moment of clarity and thought “arrrgghh how many did I order?! Who’s going to buy these?!” BUT thankfully and to my slight surprise this has been doing way better than I thought, I mean, just look at it…who wouldn’t want this!
