This Month in Comics: A Wrap-Up of the Best and Worst of July

This month is mine! It’s my turn to thumb through the pages of the books I’ve read this month and report back to you what was worth my time and what made my eyes roll so far into the back of my head that I could see my brain stem. So sit back get a cold beverage, and let’s take a journey into July’s comics after the jump.

Best Title:
Justice League: Generation Lost

I know this is category I added this month but with it hitting twice a month I thought it was worth mentioning that it was the most consistent title of the month. I love this book and I think if you aren’t reading it you should.

Best Issue:
X-Force #28
While JL: GL is my favorite title of the month this was my favorite issue of the month. I felt there was a lot going on here and it wrapped the whole Second Coming event a lot better than the Second Coming #2 issue did. I thought the art was brilliant in parts and the story itself was emotionally gripping.

Worst Issue:
Superman #701

This was a disaster. Superman as played by Forrest Gump sounds like a terrible pitch so how this got to the printers is beyond me. Hey DC, I’ve got a Batman story where he rides a bicycle you guys interested?

Best New Title:
Science Fiction Fantasy #1

This was a fresh book. It’s not my usual capes and cowl and I loved it. It has a real pulpy feel and everything from the material it’s made of to the way the story is told is unique compared to what else is currently out there. Plus, it has a Paul Pope one pager at the end just to seal the deal. BUY IT!

Best Scene:
Batman: Brave and the Bold #19
The Whole GL history is given in one ridiculously well laid out page.

While this book is a “kids” book this issue had some great pieces. It had GL Batman creating all his vehicles as constructs to fight Cyborg Superman and it even had a one-page history of the Gl Corps that should be handed to people who are interested and want the most abbreviated and understandable version they can get of the GL Corps. The text box and balloon work on the page are also amazing. Well laid out in total and the best scene of the month.

Worst Scene:
Wolverine vs Hope to see who gets to drink or sleep in an alley
Wolverine Origins #50

I know this is a simplistic version and there was supposed to be meaning behind this but it was done really poorly. It really boiled down to a pissing match of whether or not Hope or Wolvie would get to sleep or get wasted in a dirty ass alley. Hope even hits Wolvie. If Superman had not been so bad this story alone would have catapulted Wolverine: Origins #50 into the worst issue loser circle.

Best Writer:
Judd Winick

His stuff on Justice League: Generation Lost has been nothing short of awesome. The series has been excellent and the issues released this month were a great read. The last issue focusing on Captain Atom was one of the best to hit the stands yet. Granted there haven’t been many yet but I imagine they are only going to get better.

Continued below

Worst Writer:
JMS

I love JMS but that Superman issue was terrible. It was incredibly boring and while it touched on human level issues it was done in a way that was very one-dimensional. While it was intended to show Superman reconnecting with America I felt he was more or less even more separated. I mean really watching a lady potentially commit suicide instead of getting her the help she needed? Yeah, I was never more certain Superman is an alien and that Lex is right. Superman can’t save mankind because he doesn’t understand it; he’s not one of us.

Best Artist:
Adam Kubert

His work between the covers of Astonishing Spider-man and Wolverine was jaw dropping. I’ll never get over the fact that Adam Kubert is a stone cold killer when it comes to pencils. He draws my favorite wolverine outside of Jim Lee and his Spidey is nothing to be ashamed of either. The details in his art what’s killer though. Jut gorgeous stuff.

Worst Artist:
Joe Quesada

His work on the first issue of the O.M.I.T. storyline was interesting to say the least. While it wasn’t entirely bad his people were bloated as all hell. MJ went from model to plus size model. Pete was treated no better. I found myself wondering how he fit in the suit to be honest.

Best Cover: Batman and Robin #13
by Frank Quietly

Awesome cover. The HAHA in the background and the visual of a Robin about to crowbar the Joker in the back of the head while Batman flies in to attempt the save is chilling. I love the colors used too as it really makes it stand out from the books around it. Well done piece by Frank Quietly as usual.

Worst Cover:
Anything World War Hulks

Come on these things were just terrible. Hulked up versions of Marvel superheroes? Not only were they not cool looking the covers themselves weren’t very inspired or interesting to look at. A quick glance and then an even quicker eye divert is about all these were worth.

There you have it – my likes and dislikes for the month of July. See you in another four months when it’s my turn again. Till then, enjoy the other guys selections.
