This Month in Comics: A Wrap-Up of the Best of November

Another month is down the drain, and now we’re heading in the home stretch of the month. What did I think was the best and worst of the month? Click the cut for more!

Best Book of the Month: Scarlet #3

This was one of the first books I reviewed this month, and it was the benchmark from then on out. Nothing else really matched up to the brilliance of this book. Scarlet is making her plans. Scarlet is brilliant. Her plane to take on the government seems to have reached near Guy Fawkes-ian iconography. She’s looking for a movement, and she might just get it.

Worst Book of the Month: Avengers #7

Ironic that Bendis gets both best AND worst book of the month, huh? Well, I’m not opposed to Red Hulk, but this was just a mess. The Hood was on the run and broke when we last saw him, but now he’s gathering the Infinity Gems and spending billions of dollars like it’s nothing? Blackbolt left his gem in the foundation of former Earth location, even though they had been on the moon for YEARS before heading back to the Kree? Really? This was a mess. When Red Hulk is actually a highlight…you know things are not very peachy. It didn’t help that the art was one of the most annoying things to look at. It felt like there was no depth at all. I officially dropped it. Thanks guys.

Best Scene: Kate Kane kicks Bruce Wayne in the face (while he’s wearing an afro wig!)

The picture and that statement should explain why without needing further exposition.

Runner Up: Lois-Bot tells Lex Death wasn’t Death because she didn’t have skis (Action Comics #895)

Best Writer: Paul Cornell

Whether it’s writing the always excellent Action Comics of the enjoyable Knight and Squire, you can count on him to script something that’s fun, with a very twisted sense of humor. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite writers, and this month proves why.

Best Artist: JH Williams III/Amy Reeder

Look at any page in Batwoman #0. That’s why. JHW3 drawing his baby Batwoman in costume, combined with the innovative layouts with Amy Reeder rendering the Kate Kane sequence, Batwoman was a creative powerhouse.

Runners Up: RB Silva (Action Comics Jimmy Olsen back-up), Nicola Scott (Teen Titans)

Worst Artist: John Romita, Jr.

Look at any page of Avengers #7. Romita’s artwork seems to have really fallen off. I’ve said it too many times, but it’s true. Either everyone looks really flat with no real detail, or there’s too much detail, or the character designs are just…off. And boxy face is not a good look for anyone.

(NOTE: while looking for this picture, I found a lot of classic art that I loved. I miss it, Come back, Awesome Romita!)

Gilbert Short

Gilbert Short. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. When he's not reading comic books so you don't have to, he's likely listening to mediocre music or watching excellent television. Passionate about Giants baseball and 49ers football. When he was a kid he wanted to be The Ultimate Warrior. He still kind of does. His favorite character is Superman and he will argue with you about it if you try to convince him otherwise. He also happens to be the head of Social Media Relations, which means you should totally give him a follow onTwitter.
