This Month In Comics: February 2016

February was kind of a nothing month, honestly.

Being the shortest month of the year, there wasn’t exactly a lot of time to fit the good stuff in there and most of the month was spent looking forward to what we’ve got coming in the rest of the year. Sure, Deadpool was released, but in a year that’s got Civil War, Dawn Of Justice and Apocalypse lined up I feel like it’s going to be a footnote by the end of 2016.

Probably the biggest news we got was that Supergirl and The Flash will be crossing over next month which is honestly more interesting than whatever Batman V. Superman has going on.

Also, we’re two months into the year and we’re still without a Rogue One trailer. Will we ever see any of this film? Will we ever be free?

Best Comic: Mirror #1 (Image)

I’m such a sucker for good fantasy comics. Sure, “Mirror” #1 was obtuse and, at times, confounding as it dove right into the plot and world without much prep or introduction, but, much like Dark Souls, that’s where a lot of charm comes from. You understand the world as you explore it and you begin to piece together each characters’ past as you spend more time with them and by the time you get to the end, you’re left wanting more.

Yes, that’s what I’m trying to get at: “Mirror” #1 is the Dark Souls of comics.

Runner Up: “Power Man & Iron Fist” #1

Best Writer: Emma Rios (“Mirror” #1)

Emma Rios has already impressed us, time and again, with her artwork, but it was here that she impressed with her writing. Creating a mesmerising world with Hwei Lim that was a fantasy unlike any ever seen before, her writing brought a lyrical, poetic quality to the comic.

Between “Mirror” and her “ID” story in “Island”, I am intensely glad that Emma Rios has delved into the world of writing and that her writing has the same gorgeous and fluid quality as her artwork.

Runner Up: Mark Waid (“Archie” #6)

Best Artist: Sanford Greene (“Power Man & Iron Fist” #1)

Sanford Greene’s wispy and lightly constructed linework belies the strength of “Power Man & Iron Fist” #1. With characters that feel at once exaggerated – Luke’s tower physique and Danny’s tiny, lithe frame in comparison – and real thanks to intricately detailed facial expressions and body language, Greene is an artist that brings life to a comic through the characters and the world.

If you somehow missed this comic, do yourself a favour and go back and read it. It’s gorgeous.

Runner Up: Martin Morazzo (“Snowfall” #1)

Best Superhero Movie By Default: Deadpool

You know, I was let’s say less than impressed with Deadpool. It’s jokes were obvious, it’s structure uneven, it’s characters shallow and it’s action was actually pretty generic once you got past the highway scene.

Still, it was the only superhero movie to come out this month so it wins by default which is, somehow, entirely in character.

Runner Up: No one, that’s the joke.

Best Idea as a Comic: Street Fighter X GI Joe (IDW)

I don’t really know why this comic exists, but I’m glad it does if only for the fact that there exists a universe where M. Bison and Cobra Commander hang out.

That’s it. That’s all I got here.

I mean, can you imagine? It’s amazing.

Runner Up: “Bill & Ted Go To Hell” #1 (BOOM! Studios)

Most “Why?” Comic: “Superman: Coming Of The Supermen” #1 (DC)

Apparently I’m not done with this comic because OH MY GOD WHAT? I still don’t understand who this comic is supposed to be for. There’s no one on this Earth that I would ever want to subject this comic to. It’s non-sensical. It genuinely feels like Adams was making this comic up as he was drawing it and saw a trailer for Gods Of Egypt on TV as he got to the final pages.

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
