This Month In Comics: November 2015

November in comic books was almost a blur for me thanks to there being so many books, binge watching Jessica Jones and my hectic work schedule, I didn’t get to nearly everything but that’s basically impossible anyway. Here’s what I consider the best of November.

Best Issue: Midnighter #6

I won’t spoil what happens in this issue but everything that has happened since issue one leads up to a crazy twist this month. “Midnighter” makes the case for the best superhero title each month because it doesn’t shy away from displaying all aspects of Midnighter’s life. “Midnighter” #6 is no exception and that twist will hit you like a ton of bricks. If you haven’t been reading this series, you have to do fix that.

Best Debut Issue: Ringside #1

I don’t get to talk about it on this site as much but I’m a huge professional wrestling fan. I even sort of live tweet Monday Night RAW every week and it’s always fun. The overlap in comic book fans and wrestling fans is something you can’t totally ignore and that’s why I’ve always loved the idea of more wrestling comic books getting made. “Ringside” #1 dealt with a lot of wrestling stuff like the unpredictability of backstage, the traveling, the difficulty in aging in the business but it also introduced a sort of crime noir plot that I wasn’t expecting. I’m so here for this series.

Best All New All Different Marvel Debut: The Vision #1

I have a little bit of a “told you so” attitude about “The Vision” being so good because when it was announced, I said multiple times that this would be a series to pay attention to because Tom King is basically killing it right now. “The Vision” has this really creepy feeling to it and presents such a true vision of what the suburban life is like. Add in the fact that they’re a family of androids and things get complicated thanks to the contemplation of purpose and the definition of humanity. This actually fits the all new all different label that Marvel is sticking on these books and you should absolutely read it.

Best Artist: Chris Bachalo

Right now, I am all about what Bachalo is doing in “Doctor Strange”. He has been the perfect fit for the series capturing a great fantasy vibe with a touch of cartoony zaniness. “Doctor Strange” is different from what’s come before for this character but visually it’s a ton of fun because Bachalo has been trying some new things.

Best Writer: Tom King

Tom King is blowing up all over comics right now and he continued having a great year this month. “The Vision” was the best Marvel debut of the month, “Grayson” continues to be a lot of fun and “The Omega Men” is still DC’s best ongoing series. King can seemingly do no wrong right now and I’m so excited to see what comes next for him.

Most Pleasant Surprise: All New Wolverine #1

I’m a big fan of Tom Taylor’s work but I’ve never been a big fan of Wolverine. I was so happy after reading “All New Wolverine” #1 because it was nothing like my expectations and I immediately added it to my pull list. This is the perfect book for people who were lukewarm on Laura or even Wolverine and a particularly good series for those not fans of the X-Men. It’s very accessible and the art team of Lopez, Navarrot and Fairbairn come together to make a gorgeous looking action book.

Best Graphic Novel: Ashes

“Ashes” by Mario Candelaria and Karl Slominski tells the story of Matt, a New York City firefighter who gets injured in the line of duty and has to rebuild his life from the ground up. “Ashes” is a respectful story about those who go out of the way to save us everyday and it’s an excellent examination of moving on after tragedy. Slominski’s art is gorgeous and does so much with no color. The inking is heavy in the right places and creates for a noir like atmosphere. “Ashes” is a fantastic book that is perfect for fans looking for a more “true to life” story in their comic books.

Best Comic Book TV Show: Supergirl

So yes, I’ve been writing a lot about Jessica Jones and I adore that show but I’m going with Supergirl this month because I think the world needed this show. We’ve got plenty of dark shows that take things very seriously (rightfully so in the case of Jessica Jones). Supergirl is so cute, delightful and as it’s gone on, it’s started to find it’s footing even better. Supergirl isn’t afraid to be campy and embraces it’s comic book elements even more than The Flash does.
