Walter’s Got You Covered!

You get a double-dose of Walter today as I step in for Burpee and give you my opinions on the best covers of the past week. Will we be seeing the standard chart-toppers of Finch and Granov, or will I be bringing you something completely different? Well the only way to find out is to follow the jump, so what are you still reading this for?

5. Booster Gold #32
Kevin M
aguire

When I first saw this cover, I nearly burst out laughing. Sure, it isn’t the most technically astounding cover design (though I do love Maguire’s work), but it just captures Booster’s character so perfectly. Update: Thanks to Gil I’ve been able to locate the trade-dress that makes the cover even better. Bwa-ha-ha indeed.

4. Amazing Spider-Man #631
Chris Bachalo

I wasn’t too familiar with Chris Bachalo before he started his stint on Amazing Spider-Man last week, but now I can’t get enough of him. The way he draws the Lizard is pretty much perfect, and his kinetic style is perfect for Spidey. This gives Bachalo two weeks in a row on the list; not an easy feat for someone without the last name Finch, Granov or Kubert.

3. Punishermax #7
Dave Johnson

The design of this cover is just very aesthetically pleasing to my eye. The subdued grays and blues make that single red dot stand out even more powerfully, and the skewed target is just very interesting to look at. This is definitely one of those covers that could grab any passerby’s eye and cause them to leave the shop with a new book (especially with Aaron’s writing being on the inside).

2. The Unwritten
Yuko Shimizu

Maybe I’m just crazy about this book, but I have loved each and every one of its covers. Something about them just exude that air of intelligence that thrives inside the book, and this one is no exception. The artistic style is very unique, like the illustrations of a children’s book, and I particularly enjoy the coloration. For those that didn’t know, these are by the same person that created Hello Kitty. Interesting, no?

1. New Mutants #13
Adi Granov

Even as someone who isn’t a huge fan of Granov’s covers (at least when compared to Burpee), there was no way this cover couldn’t make the list. My normal beef with Granov is that while, yes, he has an extremely beautiful hyper-realistic style, I’ve often just found his [non Iron Man] cover designs a bit boring. Not so with this. The combination of his previously mentioned clean, realistic style with a rather abstract design results in something truly beautiful to look at. You win this time, Granov.
