We Want Comics: Ahsoka

Welcome to a new edition of We Want Comics, a column exploring various intellectual properties — whether they’re movies, TV shows, novels, video games, or whatever else — that we would like to see get adapted into comic books. Believe it or not, it’s been over a month since the finale of Ahsoka‘s first/maybe only season, so here’s a well overdue look at a few possible spin-offs, which, for the record, could also be the basis of Star Wars prose novels, or Tales of the Jedi shorts.

Ahsoka and Sabine:

One issue with Ahsoka is that we never had flashbacks to her time with Sabine Wren between Star Wars Rebels and the show, or to the Night of a Thousand Tears, when Sabine lost her whole family to Moff Gideon’s spite shortly before the end of the Rebellion. The latter is an especially huge retcon for the epilogue of Rebels that gets dropped on us in the middle of the show, which never gets explored thanks to the focus on Sabine getting Ezra back. It’s a very good reason to hope for a spin-off exploring her initial apprenticeship to Ahsoka, when her grief probably exacerbated her struggle to learn to use the Force; it could also shed light on just what Ahsoka was doing during the war itself.

Skoll and Hati:

With all due respect to Marrok, Captain Enoch, the Great Mothers, and the Noti, Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati were absolutely the show’s breakout new characters, especially with the late Ray Stevenson’s magnificent performance as the fallen Jedi mercenary. Regardless of whether the character is recast and returns onscreen or not, it’d be great to learn about their history during the Empire, the Rebellion, and the New Republic, and a beautiful way to commemorate Stevenson after his untimely passing this summer.

Thrawn and Ezra in Exile:

Thrawn and Ezra Bridger’s nine years (at least) on Peridea is simply rich material for a spin-off, much like how Obi-Wan Kenobi’s exile on Tatooine was fertile ground for many books for years before his own Disney+ series. Thrawn creator Timothy Zahn himself once commented he imagined the pair becoming an odd couple to survive, something we know was definitely not the case after the show, but the two still had an interesting relationship: if you look carefully at Ezra’s costume (left), you’ll realize his scale armor is made up of stormtrooper dog tags. Talk about an awkward co-existence!

Morgan Elsbeth:

Morgan Elsbeth, a character introduced during Ahsoka’s live-action debut in The Mandalorian, was played up as her foil during the series, but we still know incredibly little about her, aside from her believing she was Thrawn’s greatest ally, and that she was a Nightsister who presumably survived their massacre during the Clone Wars. She definitely sounds like a subject Timothy Zahn and Jody Houser (who scripted Marvel’s adaptations of the Thrawn novels) could reteam on to flesh out her backstory; a spin-off would also be a great opportunity for Diana Lee Inosanto to take center stage, whether it’s for a short film or an audiobook.

New Prisms:

There was much discussion online about Ahsoka‘s nature as a live-action continuation of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels, about whether it was the right choice artistically, and if it would work for newcomers who hadn’t watched the animated shows. This provides an interesting possibility for a comic book adaptation of the series: what if it were rendered in the style of Rebels, just as the fifth episode gave us a live-action take on Clone Wars? It would be really unique. Similarly, it’d be interesting to see adaptations of both shows using the live-action actors’ likenesses, especially Hayden Christensen and Young Ahsoka actress Ariana Greenblatt.

Thoughts? Be sure to let us know in the comments; and as always, may the Force be with you.
