Today brings the ending of one of our favorite initiatives ever in the art benefit month Guardians Month, which has been a full month of spectacular artists sharing pieces they crafted to be auctioned off to support Bill Mantlo. It’s only been successful because of the generosity of many, many kind artists out there, and it’s the second month of art we’ve run after the also enormously successful 20 Years of Hellboy one we ran back in March.
It’s been a hell of a year for artists at Multiversity, but I’ll be honest: we’ve asked a lot out of them, and for once, we’re going to give them a break. For the past three years in August, we’ve run a month straight of interviews, art features and process pieces with some of our favorite artists, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun, but it’s a lot to ask out of artists on top of everything else.
We still wanted to run Artist August, though, as it has become one of our favorite traditions at Multiversity, so this year we’re going to do things a little different. Throughout all of August, each day will feature write-ups by one of five members of our staff – Brian Salvatore, David Henderson, Mark Tweedale, Mike Romeo and myself – highlighting why certain artists are such incredible talents, what makes them personal favorites, and a bevy of work personally curated by each staff member (sourced throughout of course). It gives us a way to highlight some incredible artistic talents throughout the history of comics in the spirit of Artist Augusts past.
In an hour, it kicks off with a look at one of my personal favorite’s – Massimo Carnevale – and a ton of the work that makes him one of the greatest artists in any field, not just comics.
And that’s only the beginning. Welcome to Artist August, folks. We hope you enjoy this fantastic month of art.
