A few months ago, DC announced that all of their April New 52 covers would be “WTF Certified” – in English, that means gatefold covers that revealed shocking/surprising/secret characters and events on their hidden side. We decided to investigate each cover and share with you, the Multiversity reader, just how shocking or game changing each cover is. This is “What the Friday?: Week Three.”

What was the surprise? More family craziness from Kate’s family
Is it truly surprising? Do you know her family? Not really
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? The book is pretty solid, so that makes me want to keep reading; the reveal is pretty bogus.

What was the surprise? Starling turns on her teammates!
Is it truly surprising? If you haven’t been reading the book, then sure. But this has been teased for six months now.
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? So far, Christy Marx hasn’t done too much with the book that makes me want to come back. This issue doesn’t change that.

What was the surprise? That this is a Beowulf story, without the Flash appearing at all.
Is it truly surprising? Yes – and not in a good way
Does it make sense, in story? To be fair, it sort of kind of makes sense, but not really at all. This isn’t a bad comic; it is a mediocre comic presented in a totally false way.
Does this make me want to read the next issue? Cancelled! No need!

What was the surprise? Simon Baz wields the White Lantern ring
Is it truly surprising? Not really, but Baz is an unexpected choice to wear it, even briefly
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? This book features some of the best Lantern characters, but has been underwhelming so thus far – next issue wraps up Tony Bedard’s run and makes way for Justin Jordan. Maybe wait until #21 to pick it up.

What was the surprise? Batman is using Kryptonite against Superman!
Is it truly surprising? Well, he really isn’t (Despero steals it from him) – but he does have some Kryptonite in the Batcave in case; only surprising if you’ve never read a Batman comic.
Does it make sense, in story? Yes.
Does this make me want to read the next issue? Despero is fun, so sure!

What was the surprise? Vibe vs. Kid Flash!
Is it truly surprising? Nah
Does it make sense, in story? Sure
Does this make me want to read the next issue? This book has been surprisingly enjoyable, so sure.

What was the surprise? Mon-El falls!
Is it truly surprising? Kind of – I mean, we’ll see how hurt he really is
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? This book is all sorts of boring, so not really. Love me some Mon-El, though, so maybe.

What was the surprise? The Prankster shows up!
Is it truly surprising? No
Does it make sense, in story? Sure
Does this make me want to read the next issue? New setting, same enjoyable creative team? I’ll pick that up.

What was the surprise? Jason Todd has his mind erased!
Is it truly surprising? If it turns out to be for real, then yes
Continued below
Does it make sense, in story? Totally – Jason has been haunted by his past for a long time – if he really makes a clean break, than the character is limitless in what can come next
Does this make me want to read the next issue? Yes – perhaps the first reveal that has made the next issue a definite buy.

What was the surprise? Power Girl and Supergirl meet!
Is it truly surprising? Not really
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? Actually, yes – the team up is done nicely, and the two play off each other well. “Supergirl” continues to impress – let’s just hope incoming writer Michael Alan Nelson keeps it up!

What was the surprise? Eclipso shows up!
Is it truly surprising? Not really – anything to sell these last few issues.
Does it make sense, in story? It does and, actually, it is pretty smart. Too bad that was saved for the penultimate issue of the series.
Does this make me want to read the next issue? It is ending, so if you want to see how it ends, go for it. I’ll be over here drinking coffee.

What was the surprise? Wonder Woman and Orion make out! Hot inter-dimensional love!
Is it truly surprising? When reading it in story, no, when seeing it on the cover, yes.
Does it make sense, in story? Yes
Does this make me want to read the next issue? Spoiler alert: Wonder Woman also grabs his balls. If that doesn’t make you want to keep reading, I don’t know what will!
