We here at Multiversity are fascinated by everything comics, and that includes finding out all about the people that make the books that we love. With that in mind, welcome to WorkSpace! This is where creators let us into their homes and, by getting a glimpse at their surroundings, we uncover a little about their process and their inspirations.

This week: Eric Zawadzki
Eric is the Vancouver-based comic book artist behind last year’s “The Dregs” for Black Mask, written by Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson, and the recently released “Eternal” with writer Ryan K. Lindsay

Eric, thanks so much for showing us around your work space! What can you tell us about your set-up, are you particular about it?

Eric Zawadzki: My workspace is a bit of an organized mess. My process involves me going back and forth between traditional and digital art. Also, having a computer screen in between those two worlds is invaluable because I need to constantly view the research and reference I’ve amassed for whatever project I’m working on.

What do you keep around you while you work, are there any items that inspire you?

EZ: I always keep comics and artwork around my workspace. Making comics can be long process and I’m not always eager to keep going, so having something close by that can get me excited is always a help. Artist editions are very big and unwieldy, but they’re the best at inspiring me.

Those Artist’s Editions are amazing. So what about how you work, do you have any set routines?

EZ: I usually wake up around 8am and try get to my workspace by 9am. Sometimes catching up on the latest comics news and replying to e-mails pushes my start time back a little, though. I take little breaks throughout the day and take an hour lunch. And then I usually try to end around 6pm or 7pm. Sometimes if I haven’t completed everything I needed to that day, I’ll put in a couple of hours at night.

Eric, you’ve been great, thank you!
