2019 Diamond Gem Award Winners Announced

In the midst of the uncertainty over the single market’s future following Diamond’s decision to stop delivering comics, the distributor has announced the winners of 2019’s Gem Awards, which honor last year’s best products as voted for by retailers.

DC Entertainment won four Gem Awards:
– Best Original Graphic Novel for Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo’s “Teen Titans: Raven
– Best Reprint TP or HC for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s “Dark Nights: Metal
– Toy Product of the Year for DC Prime Batman
– Collectible Statue of the Year for the “Batman Black and White” Bruce Timm Batgirl statue

Marvel Comics earned three Gem Awards:
– Anthology of the Year for “Marvel Comics” #1000
– Trade Book of the Year for “Silver Surfer: Black Treasury Edition
– Best All Ages Series Original/Reprint Graphic Novel for Saladin Ahmed and Javier Garron’s “Miles Morales: Spider-Man

Image Comics received three Gem Awards:
– Comic Book of the Year (Over $3.99) for “Spawn” #300
– Backlist Publisher of the Year
– Best Free Comic Book Day Book for “FCBD 2019 Spawn” #1.

BOOM! Studios won three Gem Awards:
– Licensed Comic of the Year for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” #1 by Jordie Bellaire and Dan Mora.
– Best Comic Book of the Year ($3.99 or under) and Best New Comic Book Series for “Once and Future” by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora.

Viz Media won two Gem Awards:
– Manga TP of the Year for “Smashed: Junji Ito Story Collection”
– Manga Publisher of the Year

Dark Horse Comics received the Gem Award for Licensed TP or HC of the Year with “Stranger Things, Vol. 1: The Other Side” by Jody Houser and Stefano Martino. IDW Publishing won the Gem Award for Indie GN of the Year with George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott, and Harmony Becker’s “They Called Us Enemy.” Funko won Toy Manufacturer of the Year, and Toy Line of the Year for their Pop! figures.
