NYCC ’19: The Harvey Awards Winners

The winners of the 2019 Harvey Award were revealed at their award ceremony last night. This year’s Harvey Awards were the 31st iteration of the awards and were the second iteration to have been awarded at New York Comic Con, having moved from Baltimore Comic Con last year. Without further ado, the nominees and winners (highlighted in bold) for all six categories are as follows:

In addition to these awards, there were seven inductees into the Hall of Fame too:

Will Elder, an American illustrator and comic book artist best known for his work in launching MAD Magazine. He died at the age of 86 in 2008.

Jack Davis, an American illustrator and cartoonist and was best known for his variety of commercial art. Like Will Elder, he was a found member of MAD Magazine. He died aged 91 in 2016.

John Severin, an American comic book artist, famed for his war comics at EC Comics such as “Two-Fisted Tales,” as well as war and Western Comics at Marvel Comics. He worked at Cracked for 45 years and was also a founding member of MAD Magazine. He died at the age of 90 in 2012.

Marie Severin, an American comic book artist and colorist, best known for her work at Marvel Comics and EC Comics. She died at the age of 89 last year.

Ben Oda, an Japanese-American letter, best known for his work at DC Comics, where he worked on “Action Comics,” “Justice League of America” and “Wonder Woman,” to name a few. He died at the age of 68 in 1984.

Alison Bechdel, an American cartoonist, best known for her comic strip “Dykes To Watch Out For,” and her graphic memoir, “Fun Home.” She also created the Bechdel test.

Mike Mignola, an American comic book artist best known for creating “Hellboy” and the Hellboy Universe, as well as “Baltimore” and the “Joe Golem” miniseries.


Finally, Maggie Thompson was awarded the Comics Industry Pioneer Award. Thompson is best known for her long running role as the Editor of Comics Buyer’s Guide.
