As announced at Comic Book Resources, Jason Aaron and Ron Garney are teaming up for a new creator-owned book, “Men of Wrath,” a mini-series debuting in October.
The book deals with a hitman named Ira Rath, and will explore what led to him becoming a hitman in the first place and how his violent family history shaped him. The book sees frequent collaborators Aaron and Garney once again teaming up, having collaborated on books like “Wolverine: Weapon X” (for an incredible run) and most recently “Thor: God of Thunder,” where Garney helped Aaron usher in Malekith back into the Marvel Universe. Aaron notes that this was the first thing he started working on post-“Scalped,” though, even before “Southern Bastards” was in the works, and the book is described as No Country for Old Men to “Southern Bastards'” Fargo.
However, unlike most creator-owned book announcements these days, “Men of Wrath” will be housed at Marvel’s ICON imprint, which used to be the home of Mark Millar’s books and the re-launched “Casanova” before becoming almost exclusively where Bendis’ various creator-owned books were housed (most recently “The United States of Murder, Inc.”). Aaron currently has a book housed at Image, “Southern Bastards” with Jason Latour, and while Aaron does not really go into too much detail of why the book is being published via Icon, he does say that he “wanted to do (his) part to keep that imprint alive.” It would be very interesting to see if Icon, which has been highly selective and limited in what it publishes, could attempt some kind of resurgence.
While the book is described as a five issue series, Aaron and Garney do have ideas for follow-ups, including “Men of Wrath” or “Women of Wrath.” Depending on the sales of this book, we could see more along the lines of what Brubaker and Philips did with “Criminal.”
“Men of Wrath” debuts in October.
