Image Comics have announced “Above Snakes,” a five-part fantasy western by writer Sean Lewis and artist Hayden Sherman (“The Few,” “Thumbs”), as well as letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Described as being equal parts inspired by Deadwood and the work of Neil Gaiman, the comic follows Dirt, a man seeking revenge for the murder of his wife, “with nothing but a talking vulture,” named Speck, “to prod him on.”

Lewis said, “After two sci-fi books with Hayden, they presented a new challenge. What about a western? I thought of all the old movies my grandpa watched. I wasn’t sure how to do that. But I did know how to blow it up. And I did know how to write about vengeance. Hayden and Hassan, have just elevated that to an ungodly level. It’s a fun book.”

Sherman added, “‘Above Snakes’ is classic western gunslinging fun that’s been made all the better by Sean’s distinct voice that, as always, immediately adds to each genre he steps into. At the same time, it’s been a blast making something new out of the well loved visual language that comes with the old west.”

In other Image news today, the publisher announced they will release “Supper Club,” a young adult graphic novel by writer/artist Jackie Morrow this August. It follows Nora, Lili, and Iris, three busy high school girls who form a secret cooking club to prioritize making time for each other. It will be released in comics stores on Wednesday, August 24, and in bookstores on Tuesday, August 30.

“Above Snakes” #1 will begin in the meantime on Wednesday, July 13, and you can read a preview here.
