Sony Pictures have released the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which (as suggested by the title) reveals the follow-up has been split into two back-to-back films.

The trailer begins with an extended scene picking up from the ending of the first film, where Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) returns to Miles Morales (Shameik Moore)’s reality. Miles reveals he’s been grounded by his parents, but Gwen points out Spider-Man hasn’t. The footage then jumps to Miles free falling through the multiverse, and finding himself in a reality that visually (and musically) evokes India, implying the introduction of Pavitr Prabhakar from the 2005 miniseries “Spider-Man: India.”

Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara (the Spider-Man of 2099, who was introduced in the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse arguing with the 1967 cartoon’s Peter Parker) then attacks Miles, transporting them both to O’Hara’s native timeline. The trailer cuts to black with O’Hara hurling Miles at the camera.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writers/producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said, “Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We’re working on them both as we speak. Part Two will be out sometime in 2023. We will sleep again in 2024.”

The pair added that “Miles will reunite with some old friends and meet… a lot of new ones.” At the time of writing, it has only been confirmed Jake Johnson will return as Peter B. Parker, and that Issa Rae will debut as the Jessica Drew incarnation of Spider-Woman. Lord has previously indicated Takuya Yamashiro, the Japanese Spider-Man from the 1978 Toei TV series, will also appear in the film.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will be released in theaters on October 7, 2022. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson helmed the sequel, taking over from the original’s directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and (co-writer) Rodney Rothman. Lord and Miller wrote this installment with Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.)
