At The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog, AfterShock Comics have announced “Lost City Explorers,” a new Goonies/Stranger Things-inspired series from writer Zack Kaplan and artist Alvaro Sarraseca. The comic is about a teenage girl and her friends who go looking for her missing father, an antiquities professor, beneath Manhattan, and discover Atlantis has been under the city this whole time.

This is Kaplan’s first series at AfterShock, having published his previous books “Eclipse” and “Port of Earth” at Image Comics. “I’ve always been fascinated by urban exploration and what underground secrets a city holds,” he told Heat Vision. “I grew up on The Goonies, so I remember wanting to go looking for lost treasure or mythical wonders in my backyard. And what’s more mythical than the Lost City of Atlantis?! This is my millennial spin on all that, something personal, empowering, dark, challenging: a gritty, modern adventure story.”

Sarraseca, who is best known for penciling Chuck Wendig and Dynamite’s “Turok” miniseries from last year, described “Lost City Explorers” as “a mystery comic book with nuances of adventure, conspiracy, but it is also about feelings and the human being as a whole. Emotions, drama and personal relationships have a great weight in the plot. My goal is to make all this come to life in these pages through the expressiveness, subtle nuances and details my drawings are known for. This way, readers can easily empathize with the characters and accompany them on their journey.”

“Lost City Explorers” #1 is out June 20. AfterShock are staying silent on whether this is a miniseries or ongoing, so that will presumably depend on preorder sales. Read the solicit from the publisher below, and head over to Heat Vision for more artwork.
