As revealed at The Hollywood Reporter, today is a big day for Multiversity favorite and Comics Wunderkind, Ales Kot.
While the news about a potential “Zero” show had been revealed by Kot before, but now we know a bit more about what’s happening — and it is exciting to say the least. As revealed in the interview, Kot has written a pilot for a potential “Zero” show, and has signed with Roger Green and Phil D’Amecourt of William Morris Endeavor (aka WME), a talent agency, as well as with Ari Lubet of 3 Arts to be his manager. Together, they are working to bring the “Zero” show to life.
Kot elaborates on the plan for the show, which will not strictly follow the comic:
“The TV series is not the same as the comic,” Kot said, “but it has a very similar high-strung energy, an interest in many of the same themes and an atmosphere that lies at the intersection of a stylized, adrenaline-heavy action thriller and an existential spy horror. It’s an exploration of the secret super-agent archetype, of American dreams, and of American dread—an examination of privacy, security, freedom, and what we do for them.”
Adaptations between mediums are always tricky, so not adhering to the book seems like a smart way to go (and avoid general fan ire, to say the least).
Of course, in many ways, this announcement from Ales does seem to reflect what he did with the book, which was to assemble a few core collaborators (Tom Muller on design, Jordie Bellaire on colors and Clayton Cowles on letters) while he retains creative control of the series. I am, as always, reminded of a quote from one of the first interviews Ales did with us at the site, when he remarked ““Zero” is me having free reign. I am interested in having full creative control in everything I do.”
In addition to the “Zero” show, Ales notes that he has more Marvel and creator-owned comics in the works, as well as three screenplays in “active development,” which he hopes to have sold by the end of the year. And, as always, we wish Ales nothing but the best of luck, and look forward with great anticipation to what comes next.
