Amazing Spider-Man #647: The End of Brand New Day?

Another bit of news revealed by Johnston is that the current Amazing Spider-Man paradigm Brand New Day will be coming to a close with a momentous issue featuring the whole of Team Spidey – Dan Slott, Bob Gale, Joe Kelly, Mark Waid, Fred Van Lente and Zeb Wells – as well as a laundry list of as yet undetermined artists (but for Spidey fans, you know we’ll get some Marcos Martin, Max Fiumura and Chris Bachalo, and what else do we really need?). This 64 page special will mark the culmination of this ongoing thrice monthly set up.

What does that mean for the future?

A twice monthly series written strictly by Slott.

While a reformat is not surprising (three times a month was never destined to go forever), it is a little disappointing. For me, the true highlights of Brand New Day were Joe Kelly and Fred Van Lente’s pitch perfect takes on Spidey and his world. I can list through any number of stories they told that mark some of my all-time favorite Spidey stories (Van Lente’s “Keemia’s Castle”, Joe Kelly’s current “Grim Hunt” or his Rhino stories…really anything he’s written). I can even add Zeb Wells “Shed” to the mix.

But I honestly cannot even think of a single arc that Slott has written. So why Slott?

He’s got the talent for it, as his voice in The Thing and She-Hulk are a good fit for Spidey, but I just haven’t seen it yet.

Mark this one as developing, with more information coming at SDCC.
