In recent years we’ve seen some high profile superhero marriages enter into a little town called Splitsville. First, we saw Peter Parker and Mary Jane make a deal with the devil that did away with their marriage, and even more recently we’ve found out that Clark Kent and Lois Lane are having their marriage retconned as the age of DCnU (or New 52, depending on your favorite name) dawns, with Lois even picking up a new boy toy. However, last week another marriage was confirmed to be annulled – but for some reason it seems to have slipped under the radar.
So who else is joining the ranks of “single and ready to mingle,” you ask? Well, none other than Apollo and Midnighter, the previously married team of Stormwatch/the Authority. While most were concerned that they would take away the characters pre-existing sexual orientation, it seems DC has done away with the marriage instead. DC seems to have pulled a “Hey, look over there!” bait and switch on us.
So where am I getting this news? Well, Paul Cornell stated in a recent interview over at Newsarama, “Apollo and the Midnighter meet for the first time in issue one. Most asked question: yes, they’re still gay”. So, if they just met, I am imagining they are no longer married. While this seems to fit the new status quo of single being more appealing, I feel it is of some significance that this is happening since this is by far the highest profile gay marriage in mainstream comics.
While the move doesn’t eliminate any of the diversity in DC per se, I did feel it was worth noting the dissolution of this marriage of two fan-favorite characters. What do you think, fanpeeps? Good move, bad move, or other? Hit the comments and let us know!
