Via Newsarama and The Hollywood Reporter, Aqualad is taking the mantle of Aquaman this fall, earning his first miniseries in the process. The six-issue “Aquaman: The Becoming” will see Jackson Hyde, son of the villainous Black Manta, and Lucia, a Xebelian living on the surface world, inherit the title from Arthur Curry.
Writing the series is Brandon Thomas, who spent the first part of the year exploring an older version of the character as part of DC’s ‘Future State.’ Thomas is joined by artists Diego Olortegui, inker Wade von Grawbadger, and colorist Adriano Lucas. The series will also feature covers from David Talaski. Thomas will be penning a prequel story for this August’s “Aquaman 80th Anniversary Special,” the solicitation of which revealed there will be one more miniseries to mark eight decades of DC’s Atlantean characters.
The announcement comes alongside the release of “DC Pride,” an 80-page anthology celebrating LGBTQ+ characters from the publisher’s nearly 90-year history. Since his comic debut in 2010 in the page of “Brightest Day,” Hyde has become one of the most popular gay characters in the DC canon. This is partially thanks to his inclusion in Cartoon Network’s Young Justice animated series, which also began in 2010, although that version of the character (voiced by Teen Titans and Walking Dead actor Khary Payton) was simply a protégé of Arthur Curry, and only went by his Atlantean name, Kaldur’ahm (or simply “Kaldur”).
“Aquaman: The Becoming” #1 (of 6) is set to hit shelves this September.
