Via The Hollywood Reporter, Archie Comics have announced they are publishing a new “Dick Tracy” comic book next year. The book, which is co-written by Archie’s co-president Alex Segura, and Michael Moreci (“Roche Limit,” “Hoax Hunters”), will be illustrated by Thomas Pitilli, who previously contributed covers for the company’s titles “Riverdale” and “The Archies.”

The series will feature Tracy during the early years of his career as a detective. Moreci said, “I was thinking about Dick Tracy and how cool it would be to have him back in comic form. I shot Scott Cameron at Tribune [Content Agency] a quick email asking about the rights, not expecting it to go anywhere, but it turned out the Tribune guys were looking to get Tracy back into comics, so everything rolled from there.” Pitilli added on Instagram that he was “super excited to be working with such an iconic character.”

Created by Chester Gould, Dick Tracy debuted in a Detroit Mirror comic strip on October 4, 1931. The strip, distributed by Tribune, still runs today and is overseen by the Harvey Award-winning team of writer Mike Curtis and artist Joe Staton. The last company to hold the comic book rights were Blackthorne Publishing, who went bankrupt in 1990. However, IDW have been reprinting classic strips in hardcover since 2007.

“Dick Tracy” #1 is out April 11, 2018. A variant cover by Francesco Francavilla will also be available.
