Archie Is Doing WHAT?!

Despite what Gil might tell you, I’m not that big of an Archie fan. I can’t even remember the last time I read an Archie comic, to be quite frank. Probably when I was a wee tike who wasn’t allowed to read the big boy comics because they had too much violence… or something along those lines anyway. But this morning as I looked at the news on MSN.com, I saw an article that caught my eye and I just had to post about it. You know why?

Because Archie is going to pick between Betty and Veronica.

I know what you’re thinking: what?! HOW?! How on Earth can he pick between the two? I don’t know, guys. I just don’t know. It’s one hard choice to make. Do you realize that this love triangle has existed for 68 years? 68 years of being a goofy looking teenager who has strung along two hotties for his absurd ride through growing up. The plot of the upcoming arc (which will begin in Archie #600 and I might just have to buy it) will actually show Archie out of high school. Now you’re even more shocked, I know. I am too. I feel as if the very foundation of all that is normal has been absoutely eradicated without a second thought, as if the writers of Archie have decided nothing is sacred anymore! OH THE HORROR.

Obviously, that whole paragraph was incredibly tounge in cheek. I mean, in actuality, I don’t really care what goes on in the Archie-verse. Like I said, I can’t even remember the last time I read Archie. But I must say, this is a very intriguing arc, if not also a money grab. At least, that’s what it appears to me. Archie getting married and leaving high school, something that takes him from a kids comic and makes him an adult, seems like just a publicity stunt to me. Now, I remember when the death of Captain America happened and many people called it a publicity stunt. Ed Brubaker came out and said, “No, no, no. This was always planned. I had no idea the media would take it as far as they did.” It’s highly possible that this is something that had been planned for a while, and the media is just taking it and running with it, as they so often do. I remember being a kid and hearing that Superman died, and being very confused (and even more confused when I started seeing images of “lightning Superman”), and we all remember the controversy behind that one, don’t we?

So I guess we’ll see what happens with this. It’ll probably boost Archie’s sales a bit, to say the least, and I just might contribute to that. One way or another, I will read the story, just because I’ll have to know. But this is definitely an interesting way to start my day to say the least.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
