Apparently Arkham Asylum and the recently announced Arkham City are more connected than you think. In fact, they’re so connected that the plans of Arkham City were actually in the first game – it was just impossible to find. So impossible that it has laid as a dormant secret for some time now. Find this room wouldn’t give you a special achievement, and you can’t see it in any of Batman’s Batvisions. And now, in light of Arkham City’s announcement, the internet has been placing up the secret room all over the place.
As seen above, the plans show Asylum warden Quincy Sharp’s plans to create Arkham City. According to game developer Paul Crocker (as reported at Game Informer),
While building Batman: Arkham Asylum, we placed a number of ‘hooks’ into the game that tie into the ‘Arkham-Verse’. From the beginning we knew that Quincy was a bad guy, and planned what his next move would be. The room obviously ties into Arkham City, but to be fair, we hid it pretty well. We did assume that it would be found eventually and after following forum posts for 6 months or so, decided to announce it in the ‘Game of the Year’ podcast. The fans of the game have been amazing and again, reading the forums, we can see how much they value the efforts we have put into creating the background stories for the various characters and it was great to see all the posts and theories about the secret room once it was discovered. What I think people are really going to enjoy is not just how Arkham Asylum led to Arkham City, but also how the story in Arkham City sheds new light on the events you saw in Arkham Asylum.
So that’s interesting. I admittedly wasn’t a big fan of the first game, but still plan to give City a spin. It’ll be interesting to see what exactly was going on under the peripherals in it. Perhaps Quincy was more in cahoots with the Joker than anyone had previously assumed? Only time will tell.
