Well, this is unexpected. Dynamite has announced via CBR that their continuation of Sam Raimi’s Army Of Darkness will be getting a complete overhaul courtesy of Steve Niles and Dennis Calero. Niles is at this point a horror comics legend thanks to books like “30 Days Of Night” and will likely be an excellent choice for this book which, if it’s anything like the film, will blend Raimi’s patented over-top-horror, slapstick humour and swashbuckling adventure.
And it seems like Niles is up to the task, saying:
“What I’m doing with Ash and the Army of Darkness is a complete reboot. We start and the last frame of the film and then go right to the next. It’s a wild ride and I think fans of the film will be very happy because I am bringing back a lot of what made the movie so fun. My run of Ash and the Army of Darkness takes place almost entirely in the 1300’s setting. That was what made Army of Darkness stand apart. I’m hoping readers agree.”
With this year’s reboot of the franchise with Evil Dead and talks of an Army Of Darkness 2, this is possibly the best time for Niles and Calero to make “Army Of Darkness” big again. Also, be sure to check out CBR for the full Dynamite press release and art from Calero.
Groovy.
