Deadline reports the TV rights to Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson and Alex Ross’s superhero anthology comic “Astro City” have been acquired by FremantleMedia North America. The series marks the latest foray into scripted drama for FremantleMedia, which primarily produces reality TV but also co-financed Starz’s American Gods.

Busiek will co-write the pilot episode with Rick Alexander (Strong Medicine); the pair will also serve as executive producers on the show with Gregory Noveck, who was the Senior Vice President of DC Entertainment until 2010. Busiek had previously sought to dramatize “Astro City” as a movie with Working Title Films (the Universal-owned company behind the films of Richard Curtis and Edgar Wright), but their option expired in 2013.

Begun in 1995, “Astro City” explores a diverse array of heroes, villains and civilians living in the titular city. Originally an Image Comics series, the comic was published by the WildStorm imprint Homage Comics from 1996 to 2004, then by WildStorm itself until 2010. Over its run, “Astro City” has been the recipient of many Eisner and Harvey Awards, as well as several Comics Buyer’s Guide Fan Awards. The book was revived as a Vertigo title in 2013, and is set to end again next month with issue #52, though it is intended to continue as a series of graphic novels instead of a monthly comic.
