Ava DuVernay to Direct New Gods Movie

Deadline reports that acclaimed American filmmaker Ava DuVernay is to direct a New Gods movie for Warner Bros. and DC Films. The studio is expected to close a deal and appoint a screenwriter to collaborate with DuVernay on the film, which will presumably be based on Jack Kirby’s original ‘Fourth World’ saga of comic books about warring alien deities from the early 1970s.

DuVernay recently became the first African-American woman, and second woman overall, to direct a $100 million budget film with Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, and while the film drew more mixed reviews than her previous work (like the Academy Award nominated Selma or 13th), it has been relatively successful, opening at number two at the US box office last week. The director was previously in talks to direct Marvel’s Black Panther, which passed into her hands of her close friend, director Ryan Coogler. Evidently, DuVernay, who once revealed Big Barda was her favorite superhero for “many reasons,” found DC’s New Gods more to her liking.

It’s unknown when DuVernay would get round to this project, between her many feature film and documentary projects already in development, and the many other DC films scheduled for the near future, including Aquaman (out December 21), Shazam! (April 5, 2019), and Wonder Woman 2 (November 1, 2019).

So folks: are you already fancasting Orion, Mister Miracle et al.? Be sure to let us know and anything else you think in the comments.
