Avengers #1 Variant Revealed

While some may have considered the new Avengers #1 cover a possible grab at money with their focus on arguably the five most popular characters in Marvel, today Marvel confirmed that this is the actual primary lineup of the forthcoming team. This variant from Greg Land showed once again that it’s likely a team that will be fronted by industry giants Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man and Wolverine, which is very cool as it is the first time the biggest characters are all Avengers.

See after the jump for my take on opinion on the cover itself. I must share that the following opinion is not one of Multiversity Comics, but of myself.

Given that it was Greg Land, they also confirmed that Land is a) still a horrible artist, b) still makes his men look like Triple H of wrestling fame, and c) believes that in between starring in roughly 42,000 titles, Wolverine only does bicep curls. Seriously, look at that cover. Wolverine’s bicep looks like he injected whole bowling balls into it.

This is even worse quality than usual, as it comprises the static, statuesque feel of Simone Bianchi with the standard hack like art Land puts out. Throw in the fact that Bucky Barnes looks like he just sucked on a lemon and that Thor may have just assassinated random New York citizens with his errant lightning bolt, and you have a strong contender for worst cover of the year.
