It’s all coming to an end: with April’s issues, both of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers books – “Avengers” and “New Avengers” – are going to hit their finales as we approach “Secret Wars”. “Avengers” #44 (which will feature Mike Deodato on art) and “New Avengers” #33 (featuring Kev Walker) will take the current stories to their conclusions, as everyone in the respective books deals with the coming Incursions from the surrounding Earths. It’s all very apocalyptic, and in a way, kind of hearkens back to the days of 90’s events like “Age of Apocalypse” and “Onslaught” when new realities were created as a result. Needless to say, I’m licking my chops.
Odds are, the events in those issues will be what triggers the formation of Battleworld in “Secret Wars”, and will form the foundation of that event which, seemingly, will be what defines the next era of Marvel Comics. To say that they’re important is perhaps to understate the word. If you’re a Marvelite, don’t miss those books, especially given the insane lengths Hickman must have went to in order to write that many issues over such a short span of time (that’s 44 issues of Avengers in less than two and a half years, mind you).
We’ll be here to cover it, unless Multiversity is part of Battleworld and we don’t know it yet. Here’s hoping we’re not, but expect “Battleworld: Frontline” coming your way in May if that’s the case.
