Artists, Writers and Artisans’ have announced the new erotic drama comic “Casual Fling,” a gender-shifted reimagining of Fatal Attraction to be published under the Upshot imprint. The series, written by Jason Starr (“Red Border,” The Chill) with art by Dalibor Talajić (“Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe,” “Foolkiller”), will to explore the ramifications of a one-night stand, when attorney Jennifer Ryan’s casual partner turns obsessive and destructive in the pursuit of a misguided infatuation.

Starr and Talajić’s comic is described as “Fatal Attraction for the #MeToo generation” by AWA, taking the power dynamic of Adrian Lyne’s original multi-Oscar winning film, and reversing the gender roles. This time, a woman is the attorney frustrated with her marriage, and her seemingly-charming yet obsessive hook-up is the man.

“’Casual Fling’ is an erotic thriller about how one mistake can tear a family apart,” said Starr. “But it’s also about control — using sex to control, but also about how the decisions we make can control the outcomes of our lives. It’s ultimately an extremely empowering story.”

The five-part series looks to dive into the power dynamics of sex, the influence of digital communications on intimacy, and the delineation between sex as a pleasure and as a tool. Talajić labelled the book as “a tale of hard choices.”

“We are dealing with a thrilling moment in the life of an upper-class woman, so, the look I was going for was almost chic,” he said. “Finally, I wanted panels themselves to tell this story in the very layout: they overlap, they ‘fight’ with one another, suggesting hidden layers in an everyday NY family. It’s a very complex story, and I felt I had to tell it that way.”

“Casual Fling” #1 releases February 10, 2021 with a cover by Dani. Head over to THR for a lettered four-page preview.
