Cartoonist and illustrator Barry Blitt will now sit alongside Jim Morin, Mike Kieff, Darren Bell and more, as winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. Blitt’s “sweet watercolor style and seemingly gentle caricatures” for The New Yorker magazine closely beat out Matt Bors for The Nib, and freelancers Kevin Kallaugher and Lalo Alcaraz.

Blitt has been illustrating since 1992, working on magazine cover art, cartoons, weekly columns, children’s books and anthologies as a cartoonist at the forefront of the industry. His cover “Deluged,” won the 2006 Cover of the Year award from the American Society of Magazine Editors. He has done two different children’s books, George Washington’s Birthday and Once Upon a Time, the End (Asleep in 60 Seconds), and published a compilation of his work, Blitt.

The award was decided on by a panel of judges including Managing Editor of the New Orleans Advocate, Martha Carr, and prior Pulitzer winners Darrin Bell and Signe Wilkinson. Blitt sits alongside this year’s other winners, including: Christopher Knight for the Criticism award, Brian M. Rosenthal for Investigative Journalism, Ben Taub for Feature Writing, and Channi Anand, Mukhtar Khan and Dar Yasin for Feature Photography. Blitt will receive a US$15,000 cash prize for his efforts.
