Some – namely Scott Kowalchuk and Brandon Burpee – will tell you that there are few things more awesome than Batman ’66, the old kitschy Batman TV series/film starring Adam West as Bruce Wayne and Burt Ward as Robin. For every “Pow” and “Bam,” there was a legion of fans who thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then, camp was out, and gritty was in, and people forgot about (or intentionally pretended to forget about) its very existence.
Now, DC and Warner have remembered the potential of its awesome. They’re effectively realizing it, with a line of merchandise, and much more important to us, a new digital comic series from writer Jeff Parker and artist (ar-teest, as his business card says) Jonathan Case, with covers by Mike Allred.
Let me throw that down again: you have a guy writing it with the perfect sensibilities for this type of thing, and an artist with a retro style that could emulate the look and feel of the TV series without being derivative. PLUS MIKE ALLRED. I didn’t even watch the show, but I am all over this. It’s coming in Summer 2013, and will have print editions later on as well.
One last thing: this was the big announcement Jeff Parker was all worried about. To me, there’s no need to worry about something like this. It’s not like he’s bringing Angela to Marvel or something.
