Via Polygon, DC Comics have announced “Batman/Superman: World’s Finest,” a new incarnation of the two superheroes’ team-up title, written by Mark Waid with art by Dan Mora, and colored by Tamra Bonvillain.

Set during “the not-too-distant past,” the series sees Superman’s powers becoming “super-charged” after a chemical attack from Metallo, leading him to seek the Dark Knight for help. “A nearly fatal burst of power drives Bruce Wayne to his own extreme measures to help his friend… enlisting none other than the Doom Patrol for aid.”

The book marks Waid’s first series at DC since 2008, when he stopped writing for the company after falling out with former co-publisher Dan DiDio. Following DiDio’s abrupt departure from the company in February 2020, Waid has penned stories for anthologies like “Wonder Woman: 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular,” and he and Bryan Hitch have teased new, larger projects over the course of 2021. Mora, meanwhile, has been doing the art for Mariko Tamaki’s “Detective Comics” run since the start of the year.

The book will receive a prelude with a back-up in “Detective Comics” #1050, due out January 25, before beginning in full on March 15, 2022. The first issue will receive a variant cover from Mora depicting the two heroes participating in famous Superman fan Jerry Seinfeld’s series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee; a “high five” variant by Doc Shaner paying tribute to Jack Burnley and Charles Paris’s cover for 1946’s “World’s Finest” #21 (where the two are actually playing basketball); and twin variant covers from Chip Zdarsky homaging the infamous meme of Batman slapping Robin (drawn by Curt Swan for 1965’s issue #153); you can check those out here.
