The camera is a little shaky and blurry, but the first teaser trailer for Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice has leaked. Take a look, and join me below for a discussion of the teaser.
Ok, let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way first: this is a teaser trailer, and does not necessarily represent the tone or direction of the film. It is taking the perspective of Batman, showing how he thinks Superman is a threat, and that many people around the world share that opinion. For that reason, I don’t think that the actual film will be this dark.
That said, this trailer is incredibly dark and brooding – there is nary a word or a single frame of hope in the entire thing. Superman (intentionally) is presented as some sort of dark, brooding demigod, and the impression is given that Batman is created due to Superman, not due to Bruce Wayne’s tragic childhood. I don’t think that is really the case but if it is, pardon my saying so, but fuck this movie.
What I simply don’t understand is DC/WB thinks that their characters have to be so dark; look to The Flash – that show is incredibly beloved and popular, and doesn’t brood around all the time. Superman is a literal avatar of hope, and Warner Brothers seems to have missed that.
