We knew this was coming eventually, as it was one of the big things revealed back when we were just getting random old event comic teasers every day, but here it is: there will be an “Old Man Logan” mini-series tied to “Secret Wars”, and it will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art from Andrea Sorrentino.
While there’s a rather enormous part of me that is yelling “WHY CONTINUE THAT STORY?” (which came from Mark Millar and Steve McNiven and told the excellent tale of a broken Wolverine in the distant future after the villains united and killed all of the heroes except him and Hawkeye) in the same vein that I never thought Frank Miller shouldn’t continue “The Dark Knight Returns” (which we were all right about), it’s hard to argue that Bendis and Sorrentino isn’t a high quality team, or at the very least a notable one. While tonally speaking neither are a good fit for their predecessor – Millar was perfect for a story of that type, while McNiven’s clean, kinetic action sequences blended well with his detailed, emotive character work – they’re both highly gifted creators who could stake their own claim to the storyline and make something of interest.
While I’ll fully admit this isn’t for me – I just don’t think this was a path they should have gone down, and I think the creative team is a weird fit – I could see why many people could and would be excited for this. We’ll see who is right in a couple months when “Secret Wars” begins.
