Via ComicBook.com, Abrams Books have announced “Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes,” the first installment of a sci-fi graphic novel trilogy by writer Brian Michael Bendis, and artist André Lima Araújo. The book, due out this fall, is set in a post-cataclysmic world, and follows a boy named Bolden, his warrior friend Spike, and another orphan called Matilde, as they embark on a quest for the mysterious, magical realm known as the Golden City of Eyes.

Bendis stated, “André and I have spent the last couple of years conjuring an entire brand-new world filled with inspiration, ideas, and imagination. Inspired by the philosophies of our heroes and our hope for a better world, we introduce you to our exciting new heroes and their varied and dangerous world-changing quests.” Araújo said, “I drew and drew and drew, and then Brian wrote and wrote and wrote, and something that felt like magic happened.” Although the book’s cover is in color, it will have black-and-white artwork throughout.

“Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes” goes on sale September 13, and will retail at 144 pages for $24.99. The second book will be released in Fall 2023, and the third will follow in Fall 2024. In the meantime, check out a two-page spread by Araújo, and comments from Abrams ComicArts editorial director Charles Kochman, at ComicBook.com.
