The Birds of Prey have flocked together in the first official trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The trailer indicates that this is very much Harley Quinn’s (Margot Robbie) story as she grapples with her break-up from the Joker, finds a group of like-minded independent, trigger-happy women, and proves that she’s the one Gotham should fear.

The trailer opens on the cast at their start points: Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) working as a detective, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) armed and mobile, Roman Sionis/Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) in the midst of torturing a group of imprisoned women (while notably without his mask) and Dinah Lance/Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) sitting bar-side with Harley. The film looks to bring the group together out of necessity, with Black Mask and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina) coming after them for reasons unknown. Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain is a late arrival in the trailer, remaining an unknown quantity.

Birds of Prey features at least three separate looks from Harley: a post-breakup bun she sports as she laments on the subservient role of the harlequin; a set of pigtails and shoulder pads as she re-enacts Lady and the Tramp with her signature pet Hyena (from the posters this seems to be the film’s staple look); and a Marilyn Monroe-inspired stage outfit that contrasts interestingly with the Gotham grime the film seems to tap into.

In general the film looks to play the eccentric Harley against a cast of straight laced foils, evident in Black Canary, Montoya and Cassandra Cain’s apprehensive comments about the crazed Harleen Quinzel. Even the contrast between the film’s title and subtitle prepares viewers for a multi-genre romp. However McGregor’s Black Mask seems to mirror Harley Quinn’s insanity through a flamboyant and grandiose facade, with multiple shots emphazising the unraveling psychopathy of the character throughout.

Ali Wong’s role remain unknown and alongside Charlene Amoia’s Maria Bertinelli, she’s nowhere to be seen in this first trailer. Appearances from Jared Leto’s Joker and Harley’s friends from Task Force X, the Suicide Squad, remain unconfirmed but hotly rumored.

The film is set to release on February 7th, 2020.
