With “Inhumans vs. X-Men” just on the horizon and with the announcements of the X-Men post-game already concluded, this week sees the unfolding of the 2017 Inhumans line-up from Marvel. Yesterday saw the announcement of “Royals”. Today we have the first Inhuman solo book, focusing on their king, Black Bolt.

Black Bolt #1 by Christian Ward

Revealed by io9, “Black Bolt” will be an ongoing series from novelist Saladin Ahmed (The Crescent Moon Kingdoms) and illustrated by Christian Ward (“ODY-C”, “Ultiamtes”). According to the interview, Ahmed describes the story where Black Bolt is incarcerated in a mysterious prison with some of the most dangerous criminals in the galaxy and will have to team up with some unlikely allies to try and find answers and escape.

“It’s a story of a King, kind of discovering humility and also a nobility in people he was ready to write off,” Ahmed describes. “It’s a book about, nobility and power, and about your rank in the world.” He also continues to describe other core themes he’d like to explore; such as separation vs. integration and the concepts of the old world giving way to the new world.

As someone that has been following the Inhumans and finds them intriguing, this feels like a book long overdue for the King. There’s a load of potential here and the more cosmic-focus with this and “Royals” feel like just what is necessary.

“Black Bolt #1” will hit shelves May 2017.
