Marvel Comics have announced “Black Cat,” the first ongoing series starring Spider-Man’s felonious feline frenemy Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat. The comic will reunite the “Daughters of the Dragon” creative team of writer Jed MacKay, and artist Travel Foreman. Here’s the synopsis for the first issue, out in June:
Cover by J. Scott Campbell“The Black Cat is back and starring in her first ever ongoing series! Felicia Hardy has a taste for the finer things in life and a certain set of skills that can get her into any mansion, vault or museum to… procure said finer things. But due to her actions in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Felicia’s not only on the run from the police but also by the New York Thieves’ Guild and their boss ODESSA DRAKE! High octane heists, climactic chases and twist after twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat like a cat on a perch. IN THIS ISSUE – Find out a secret from Cat’s past in a bonus story that sets a foundation for the future! All this and an all new MARVEL MEOW short story by Nao Fuji!”
Created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard for July 1979’s “Amazing Spider-Man” #194, Black Cat has been one of the wallcrawler’s most enduring love interests and enemies/allies. The character has starred in several limited series, including Kevin Smith and Terry and Rachel Dodson’s controversial 2002 – 2006 comic “Spider-Man and the Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do.” The character had a villainous turn of late, becoming a vengeful mob boss after she was assaulted by the Superior Spider-Man in his 2013 series, but has become an anti-hero once more after the events of 2017’s ‘Venom Inc.’ crossover, and her reunion with Peter Parker in Nick Spencer’s current “Amazing Spider-Man” run.
On Twitter, MacKay said said he was “super psyched about this book – gags, sass, scraps, chases, history and HEISTS! All my favorite things in one book! Mark your calendars for June, this is going to be a fun ride.” This is MacKay’s most high-profile gig at Marvel yet: the Canadian freelance writer and teacher is a relative newcomer to comics, having only begun writing regular titles like “Daughters of the Dragon” and “Man Without Fear” last year.
“Black Cat” #1 will be released in June.
