Jeff Smith’s seminal, “Bone,” first appeared on comic shelves about 25 years ago. Over the course of its thirteen-year, 52-issue run, the series was instrumental in changing the face and direction of comics, especially alternative and indie comics. It helped launch Scholastic’s Graphix imprint, quite possibly the most dominating comics publisher, with the fully colored editions (colored by Steve Hamaker) and basically remains wildly read and influential today. In 2014, it was even ranked among the most constantly challenged books in schools and libraries.

This July, Smith will be returning to the world of Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, Smiley Bone, and Bartleby the Rat Creature with “Bone: Coda.” Smith announced this “new (and completely superfluous!) adventure” on his blog. The sequel will pick up right where the main series left off, documenting the “dangerous journey across the desert back to Boneville.”

This original graphic novel will also include the complete “The ‘Bone’ Companion” by Stephen Weiner, but now fully illustrated, as well as plenty of “behind-the-scenes photos & memories.”

“Bone: Coda” drops this July 2016 and is written and illustrated by Jeff Smith.
