This fall, BOOM! Studios’ “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” comic books are set to crossover in a storyline entitled ‘Hellmouth.’ This will be the first Buffyverse crossover event at BOOM!, and the first meeting of their versions of Buffy and Angel.

Though details are scarce, Newsarama reports that the crossover will begin in September’s “Angel” #5, written by Bryan Edward Hill with art by Gleb Melnikov. While little is known about the plot, ‘Hellmouth”s central premise focuses on Buffy and Angel clashing to ensure the Hellmouth below Sunnydale stays shut.

In a statement, BOOM! Studios executive editor Jeanine Schaefer said “Everything in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Angel’ has been leading to ‘Hellmouth,’ the first major comic book event featuring Buffy and Angel. But ‘Angel’ #5 is where the pieces all start coming together.” She added, “We’re excited for fans to see just how far we’ll go in this reimagining of two huge pop culture icons—because when Buffy and Angel finally meet, it’s not going to go the way you expect!”

BOOM!’s new Whedonverse has been drastically different from Whedon’s original series. In the TV show, Buffy and Angel meet in Buffy‘s first episode, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” but BOOM!’s reimagining of the Buffy mythos have already turned heads with a recent major change to one of the original Scoobies, while Angel is already living in Los Angeles in his solo series, whereas it took three seasons for the vampire to move there.

‘Hellmouth’ begins in “Angel” #5, on sale this September.
