Via The Hollywood Reporter, BOOM! Studios have announced “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow,” a five-issue miniseries starring Alyson Hannigan’s witch from the show. The comic follows on from the events of the company’s ‘Hellmouth’ crossover, and will see Willow venturing out of Sunnydale into the wider world, while grappling with her inner darkness.
The series will be written by Mariko Tamaki (“Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me”) with art by Natacha Bustos (“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”). Tamaki told the Reporter, “as a nerdy queer, I cannot think of a better job than writing a Willow adventure,” and that she was “thrilled to be a part of the Buffy world.” Bustos added, “One of the greatest things about making comics is being able to give life to the characters you love the most, and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of them.”
BOOM! executive editor Jeanine Schaefer stated, “Since we first started building our corner of the Buffyverse, we’ve been excited to give Willow her own miniseries — partly because she’s an absolute favorite of ours, but also because she is one of the most iconic queer characters in pop culture.” This marks the second time Willow has starred in a comics series, following the 2012 Dark Horse series “Willow: Wonderland” by Jeff Parker, Christos Gage and Brian Ching, which was set in their ‘Season Nine’ continuity.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow” #1 will release in June, and will come with covers by Jen Bartel and Mirka Andolfo.
