This year, BOOM! Studios has been republishing an old Grant Morrison Avengers comic serialized over six issues (the original version story was three prestige format issues). Starring the original Avengers, who got the name two years before Marvel’s characters did, the story told a short but entertaining mystery starring Steed and Mrs. Peel in a game of life and death.
Apparently happy with how their Avengers reprint has gone, BOOM! is going to keep the gravy train rolling and put out some new Avengers comics starring the classic duo. Not only that, but it’s going to take place in the original Hellfire Club (a name recognizable to fans of history and fans of comics), and it’s going to be written by Mark Waid, comic writer extraordinaire and comic psuedo-historian. With “Irredeemable” and “Incorruptible” ending, one would imagine he’s ready to sink his teeth into something new at BOOM!, and it would be appear that Steed and Mrs. Peel are the answer to that.
One could imagine that, for all intents and purposes, this comic may successfully coast on its title alone, because hey, there’s a big damn movie in the theaters with that title right now! And you just know that someone out there is going to want to read this book and say that they liked the OG Avengers before Marvel came along and had a god fight some costumed heroes.
Although, for the record, no matter how hard you try no one is really going to laugh at Avengers-related jokes. Believe me. I’ve tried to make a gag every time someone asks me my opinion on the movie, and so far no one has gotten the reference.
