BOOM! Studios have acquired the rights to publish comics based on Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro’s card game Magic: The Gathering, and announced that they will be publishing a series called “Magic,” from the creative team of writer Jed MacKay, artist Ig Guara, colorist Arianna Consonni, and letterer Ed Dukeshire. The comic will chronicle the story of three Guildmasters, Ral Zarek, Vraska, and Kaya, as they team up despite their differences, after failed assassination attempts on all of them. Together, they will travel to Zendikar in search of their assassins. The series is teased as featuring a major character from the card game.
MacKay stated “I’m extremely psyched to be digging into the world of Magic and all that entails” because “Twenty-five years ago when I was digging through the commons and uncommons bin to build my first deck, I would never have thought that one day I would be handed the reins to the Magic: The Gathering comic.” Guara echoed these sentiments, stating “It is amazing to be able to tell a story in the universe of a game I have been playing for over 20 years! I battled the Affinity deck and watched the Phyrexian take over Mirrodin,” adding “I was actually finishing a new Commander deck when the proposal came.”
The rights to Magic: The Gathering comic books were last held by IDW Publishing, who released miniseries such as “Magic: The Gathering,” “Magic: The Gathering – The Spell Thief,” and “Magic: The Gathering – Theros” between 2011 and 2018.
“Magic” #1 will be released in comic shops and digitally in April. Matteo Scalera will be providing the main cover art, with variants by Guara, InHyuk Lee, and Junggeun Yoon, as well as “Hidden Planeswalker” variants spotlighting some of the game’s most iconic characters by Miguel Mercado, Taj Tenfold, and Magdalena Pagowska.
