At the Los Angeles Times, BOOM! Studios have announced a new “Angel” comic series written by Bryan Edward Hill (“Postal”) with art by Gleb Melnikov (“Veiled and Vile”), which will drop its first issue next week on April 17. Like BOOM!’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” relaunch earlier this year, this comic will be a reboot that sees David Boreanaz’s cursed vampire uncovering a new demon uprising, and heading to Sunnydale after learning his humanity could be restored – if he takes the life of Buffy Summers.

Hill told the Times, “Angel was a really important show for me because I was watching the show when I was trying to figure myself out a little bit. Angel was going through somewhat of the same thing so I really bonded with that character.” He said the comic will explore “the struggle for the realization of your identity, the turning of shame and guilt into positive action [and] the way you can understand the darkness to wield the darkness against the darkness.” He also said he was looking forward to exploring the bittersweet love story of Buffy and Angel, explaining “that’s the side of my imagination that I rarely get to explore in fiction because I’m known as the guy who blows things up real good.”

“Angel” #0 will be released on April 17, which will also see the revamped character make his debut in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” #4. The comic will be exclusive to physical comic book stores for two weeks.
