Via Black Nerd Problems, BOOM! Studios have announced a new five-part Afrofuturist series called “Buckhead,” by the creative team of writer Shobo Coker (“Outcasts of Jupiter”) and artist George Kambadais (“The Black Ghost”).
The series will chronicle the events that unfold when protagonist Toba, and his famous scientist mother, immigrate to the small town of Buckhead in the American Northwest. Despite his initial disappointment at not living in a Big City like he always envisioned, Toba makes friends, and starts playing a mysterious video game that replicates the ancient kingdom of Benin with them. “Soon, Toba is on the run from the frightening men in black, trying to solve the mystery of his new hometown and save his friends before it’s too late!”
Coker, who is Nigerian, described the series as “a story that captures the terrifying wonder and otherworldly newness of being an immigrant kid in a new world. A story of ancient Benin kingdoms, of vengeful Yoruba daemons, of virtual reality, video games, and improbable science.” Kambadais stated similarly that the story is “full of mystery, suspense, and action!,” adding “I’m thrilled to be the one who brings to life the beautiful and exciting world that Shobo created.”
“Buckhead” #1 is scheduled for release in December with a main cover by Kambadais, a video game homage variant by Simangaliso Sibaya, and a variant by Khoi Pham. You can check out preview pages and Sibaya’s variant here.
