As one third of the Wrestleversity crew, I feel like this is the comic the entire Multiversity staff have been waiting with baited breath for. Announced exclusively over at LA Times’ Hero Complex, with the above image by Jamal Campbell, BOOM! Studios has partnered with WWE to produce a line of… of wrestling comics. Oh my god, I suddenly love 2016.
Now, it should be noted that, in the past, wrestling comics have been routinely the worst of the worst. Seriously, the Worst. Which is strange because it’s also been noted that the two overlap in a lot of amusing ways. Superhero comics, specifically, have the same kind of longform, soap opera storytelling with beefy dudes in tight clothing and inscrutable motivations as your average episode of RAW. So why, is they’ve been so terrible in the past, would I be excited about these new WWE comics?
Well, because BOOM! Studios has an excellent track record with licensed comics lately. While we don’t have any word on creatives teams or the types of books to expect, the fact that BOOM! made a Power Rangers comic one of the must read comics of the year speaks to the level of care and quality put into their licensed products over there. If they can find comic creators who know and love wrestling (which, let me tell you, is a lot), then this is a goldmine for them.
Also, be on the lookout for Wrestleversity annotating the shit out of these comics when they come out. We’re going hard.
