What can you do in 24 hours? Or rather, what do you do? I would wager that while creating comics (or at least the consumption of) is certainly a part of it given that you’re visiting this site, the creation of a single comic, from beginning to end, is not part of it.
For French artist Boulet, however, it is. Created in just a bit over 24 hours (Boulet notes it was done in 26 hours, from January 24th to 25th at Angouleme), Boulet created and uploaded online Darkness, the story of a weird new roommate and the havoc that he brings to our protagonist. Inviting his friend over to discuss the issue, we are brought into the world of caricatural people and the men and women who make our hearts do funny maneuvers.
Telling a story that is both familiar and poignant with a friendly dash of humor, Darkness is — literally — the perfect example of a 24 Hour Comic Day comic. From the front cover through to the back, Boulet’s art and story combine for a palpable mix of emotional relevance and incredible inner depth, with a style that is at times both akin to Jamie Hewlett or even Moebius. It’s the perfect story about being young and living on your own with a stranger, but its an even more perfect story of the accidents that help us fall in love.
And the best part? It’s absolutely free for you to read, right now, while you’re sitting there on the computer. So why don’t you just read it?
Do yourself a favor, and check out Boulet’s full comic Darkness on his website. It is arguably the best free comic you’ll read today.
